Design Selection and Geometry in OWC Wave Energy Converters for Performance

Although oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters are arguably one of the most studied technologies, it is not clear which chamber geometry, among all available alternatives, would provide best performance at a site interest. In this work, numerical model based on Navier-Stokes equations for two compressible fluids, using volume-of-fluid interface-capturing approach, implemented to determine performing OWC geometry in case study off Port Vigo (NW Spain). Four general shapes analyzed: classic, stepped-bottom, U-shaped and L-shaped, geometrical variants investigated. total, 18 geometries studied, considering same turbine them. It was found that L-shaped designs easily tuned resonate period Of these two, performs better. The achieved an design with shallow entrance, high horizontal duct wide vertical duct, maximum capture-width ratio 71.6% achieved.
